Friends,

As you may know I first ran on a platform to empower Democrats with reforms and outreach. Our efforts to strengthen our 50-state strategy and 57-state and territory partnership with resources to state parties and trans-partisan coalitions with stakeholders were successful. We worked for months on efforts to #ProtectOurCare and WON against TrumpCare because we worked together.

My ongoing efforts to promote people-powered politics over corporate interests at the DNC include 3 resolutions to address the WHO, WHAT, and HOW of Democratic Politics: WHO we empower (every voter counts so we need Automatic Voter Registration); WHAT we believe: people-powered politics (encourage grassroots donors over corporate interests that conflict with our Platform); and HOW we fight (with Civil Discourse in the era of Trumpian divisiveness). All 3 Resolutions come up for consideration by the DNC on October 20 in Las Vegas. I hope you’ll support them.

Thank you.

Resolutions by Christine Pelosi for consideration by the Democratic National Committee at the October 19-21, 2017 DNC Meeting in Las Vegas, NV:

WHO we empower –> Resolution Supporting Automatic Voter Registration

Respectfully submitted by Travis Nelson, OR and Christine Pelosi, CA

WHEREAS, Democrats believe that the right to vote is America’s civic sacrament – the highest obligation we have as citizens: and

WHEREAS, we know that voter participation increases when barriers are removed from the voting process; and

WHEREAS, Democrats believe that we must continue to work to make voting easier not harder for the American people; and

WHEREAS, Democrats believe that any and all attempts to implement laws and regulations that suppress the vote – from Donald Trump’s fake voter fraud commission to voter purges to modern-day poll taxes disguised as voter ID laws to onerous restrictions on automatic or same-day voter registration – must be defeated

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Democratic National Committee reaffirms the Democratic Party’s commitment to universal automatic voter registration and same day voter registration and hereby calls for such actions in as many jurisdictions as possible before the 2018 election to maximize voter turnout and strengthen our democracy.

WHAT we believe –> “Walk Our Talk” Resolution Promoting People-Powered Politics

Respectfully submitted by Christine Pelosi, California

WHEREAS, we Democrats have the opportunity to reform and revive our party by empowering diverse grassroots Democrats at the leadership table and in our communities including building on our recent successes with small donor fundraising programs; and

WHEREAS, the American people are looking to Democrats to PROMOTE people-powered politics in this era of resistance, revival, and reform but are rightly concerned that their voices are drowned out; and,

WHEREAS, in addition to President Obama’s 2009–2016 ban on all corporate PAC donations to the DNC, our state parties have been drawing bright lines for years with respect to rejecting donations from various corporate interests that conflict with our Democratic platforms such as tobacco, pay day lending, and gun manufacturers to perpetuate what President Obama referred to in his Farewell Address as our efforts to “reduce the corrosive influence of money in our politics, and insist on the principles of transparency and ethics in public service;”

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Democratic National Committee acts to revive trust in our Party by encouraging grassroots donors and by rejecting corporate donors that conflict with our DNC Platform in order to empower Democrats to “Walk Our Talk” in harmony with our stated beliefs and convictions.

HOW we Fight –> Resolution Encouraging Civil Discourse

Respectfully submitted by Dr James Zogby, Washington DC and Christine Pelosi, California

WHEREAS, Donald Trump has done grave damage to our national unity by spewing attacks on Americans based on our race, faith, nationality, gender, gender orientation and identity, and disability; and

WHEREAS, Donald Trump has contributed to the coarsening of our national discourse by normalizing the use of vulgar language, demeaning personal insults, and incitement against opponents; and

WHEREAS, Donald Trump has further aggravated the situation by his casual embrace and absolution of the activities of white supremacists; and,

WHEREAS, Democrats emerged from a difficult contested 2016 primary election, unified and resolved to follow the advice of former First Lady, Michelle Obama who told us that “when they go low, we go high;” and

WHEREAS, the goal for Democrats must be to challenge not only the Republican agenda but to demonstrate by example that personal attacks and divisive rhetoric are not the way we will lead, win, and transform America;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that we, as Democrats, will work to create an informed electorate, committing ourselves to advancing a progressive vision for America by engaging each other and our opponents in civil discourse, leading by example to undo the damage Donald Trump has done to our national unity; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we pledge to refrain from personal attacks, using insults to demean opponents, pitting groups against each other, and engaging in tactics that shut down honest debate on issues so that we can help rebuild the national sense of common purpose our country so desperately needs.

(Christine Pelosi speaks at the DNC Future Forum on her resolution. Watch now.)

WHEREAS, we Democrats have the opportunity to reform and revive our party by empowering diverse grassroots democrats at the leadership table and in our communities; and

WHEREAS, the American people are looking to Democrats to PROMOTE people-powered politics in this era of resistance, revival, and reform but are rightly concerned that their voices are drowned out by corporate dollars and big donor-driven decisions; and

WHEREAS, as President Barack Obama said in his farewell address, “When trust in our institutions is low, we should reduce the corrosive influence of money in our politics, and insist on the principles of transparency and ethics in public service”

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Democratic National Committee acts to revive trust in our Party by reinstating President Obama’s BAN on corporate donations to the DNC; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Democratic National Committee prioritizes people-powered politics by banning corporate lobbyists serving as DNC chair-appointed, at-large members in favor of empowering the service of diverse grassroots Democrats so that more people’s voices can be heard at the DNC and across the country.

PASSED –> RESOLUTION TO ORGANIZE A REVIVED 50-STATE STRATEGY AT THE DNC TO EMPOWER DEMOCRATS AND OUR ALLIES

WHEREAS, Democrats across America are ready to engage with love and resistance – love of country, Constitution and community; resistance to Donald Trump’s efforts to undermine and reverse the progress we made under President Obama – but can only do so if the Democratic National Committee organizes a 3,143-county, 59-member state party partnership, 50-state strategy where everybody matters; and

WHEREAS, the Democratic National Committee showed that a strong element of the electoral successes of 2006 and 2008 and the policy advancements of 2007-2017 was a strong unified field program; and

WHEREAS, with more progressives organizing in trans-partisan coalitions including those from labor to faith to veterans to LGBTQ to immigrants to climate, we Democrats must engage with all constituency communities in order to train the next generation of leaders and collectively take the fight to Trump’s GOP every day and everywhere; and

WHEREAS, the value of on the ground staff hired in consultation with local state parties is immense and will enable state parties to develop outreach necessary to reach out to underrepresented communities and constituencies in a planned and comprehensive manner; and

WHEREAS, the DNC and our State Parties need to engage and energize our base and constituencies as we prepare for a coordinated campaign everywhere and consistent and comprehensive organizing will improve electoral options up and down the ballot in 2017 and beyond;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Democratic National Committee ORGANIZE our 50-state strategy with state-based staff hired in consultation with the local state party and required to perform coalition building with Democrats and nonpartisan groups and constituency communities so that we train the next generation of leaders, build progressive majorities, and collectively take the fight to Trump’s GOP every day and everywhere; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the DNC Chair shall report to the full DNC membership and the public no later than June 1, 2017 a comprehensive plan to implement the program immediately upon its adoption at the DNC summer meeting or by email vote by June 15, 2017, whichever is earlier.

PASSED –> RESOLUTION TO REVIVE OUR CONNECTION TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WITH DEMOCRATIC OUTREACH THROUGH THE ARTS

WHEREAS, Arts and culture play a vital role in our society, sparking connections between our internal creativity and shared humanity, strengthening our economy, enriching our communities, and developing individual expression; and,

WHEREAS, the first few weeks of the new presidential administration has been a non-stop assault on the first amendment from misleading the media with “alternative facts” and outright lies to stifling public employees to firing dissenters including the Acting Attorney General; and,

WHEREAS, the Trump administration’s disdain of public support for the arts is manifest in a budget proposal to zero out the National Endowment for the Humanities whose annual budget of $148 million is LESS than the cost of Trump’s inauguration and whose vital mission of promoting excellence in the humanities and conveying the lessons of history to all Americans is essential to our civic life;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Democratic National Committee revive our connection to the American people by establishing a DNC ARTISTS COUNCIL to defend the First Amendment against the Trump administration’s relentless onslaught, promote arts and culture in economics and education, and engage communities through the arts.

PASSED –> RESOLUTION TO EXPAND PARTY OUTREACH WITH DEDICATED DNC CONSTITUENCY STAFF AND RESOURCES

WHEREAS, as the Democratic National Committee engages in our daily resistance to the Trump administration and long term preparation for the 2017-2020 elections, we need the fullest participation of every DNC Member and constituency; and,

WHEREAS, DNC Members deserve access to the basic building blocks of organizing – membership lists, communications tools, and information from the officers and staff out to Democrats across the country – but are often stymied despite the best efforts of overworked staff by a hierarchical culture and consultocracy that yields distrust and discontent (manifest in the 2016 primary) and prevents us from most effectively engaging Democrats and allies; and,

WHEREAS, dedicating staff and resources to the DNC Members, caucuses, committees, and councils will provide transparency and continuity as the DNC attempts to renew our relationships and expand our outreach to our consistency communities;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE expand Party outreach and improve morale by hiring dedicated DNC constituency staff in consultation with the elected leadership of the caucuses, committees, and councils.
